Content Management System or commonly known as CMS is usually used today to easily manage data such as videos, audio, pdf, user accounts and other data files. A webmaster must know all the CMS aspects and be familiar as possible with different CSM like Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal. The very common CMS is Wordpress because of it's friendly user interface and different plugins. Joomla and Drupal are also good.

To be able to manipulate CMS specially when customizing themes should need knowledge on CSS, HTML and a basic PHP. Webmaster has a limitation when it comes to PHP. They never do PHP coding from scratch. A combination of graphics skills can successfully modify a CMS theme.

Web Designing Tasks

Webmaster is known as the site's caretaker. There are lots of responsibility when working as webmaster and designing task is involved. Web Designer is great but it's skills limit only to creating visual presentations like graphics, website layout designs, and creating static pages using basic CSS and HTML.

While having a webmasters, they can perform advanced CSS, HTML and a basic form of php programming language. Webmasters are also capable of creating graphics design such as headers and website layouts while making sure that they work properly on every browser.

Webmaster should also be flexible as possible when using designing software. Adobe Photoshop or Corel Draw are great tools however not all clients would bought you a licensed software. So having a knowledge on using free designing software like Inskape or Paint.Net is really an advantage. Although there are portables but it is still great to have the ability on manipulating different graphics software.

Site Maintenance as Webmaster's Duty

Webmaster is a critical position and needs a deep training in order to be capable of handling such duties. We often hear about maintaining a website but we do not know exactly how to maintain a website. Site maintenance is one of the top responsibility of a Webmaster. It is a way where you can know any potential errors and adjustments on a certain site. Meaning webmaster must know the process, flow and the system of a certain site.

Links are very important and should work well on a site. Under site maintenance, link checking is a must. Webmaster should check each site links if they are working properly. Must take note and repair all broken links as it will affect the site's performance on the search engines. Link of images and download links should also be check to see if they all worked as what they should be.

Checking log reports is also essential. Webmaster should monitor all users who logs on the site. Through that way, the webmaster will know if the site needs an upgrade due to large data stored on the site or needs some adjustments, design changes, systems or other site functions that you think are essential to be made in order to make the site user friendly and more useful.

A webmaster should know how to update a site like creating new featured links or promos, where users can see a latest entry about the site. Site maintenance also includes moderating comments and responding to comments. This is important to make comment page more interactive, to get acknowledgement and concerns that needs to be forwarded to the site owner.
